About Grow Through Connection

Practical, relationship-based support for understanding what sits beneath behaviour and helping children grow through connection.

PAEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST · FOUNDER

Hi, I’m Elise

I’m a paediatric occupational therapist and the person behind Grow Through Connection.

My work has taught me that children rarely need more adults telling them to try harder, calm down or behave differently. They need adults who are curious about what their behaviour is communicating, and who understand that regulation, confidence and participation grow through safe, connected relationships.

Grow Through Connection was created to turn that understanding into practical support for parents, educators and therapists.

The reason behind the resources

Why I created Grow Through Connection

There is so much valuable information about child development, regulation and neurodiversity. But good theory does not always tell you what to do when your child falls apart after school, refuses to leave the playground or cannot manage one more demand.

I wanted to help bridge that gap.

The resources here are designed to make relationship-based and neuroaffirming ideas easier to use in everyday life. They give you practical things to try, words you can borrow and explanations that help you understand what may be happening beneath the behaviour.

They are not rigid programs or another list of things you should be doing perfectly. They are starting points, made to be adapted to the child, the environment and the moment.

The ideas that guide this work

What guides my work

I believe that behaviour makes sense in context.

A child’s capacity can change depending on how safe they feel, how much energy they have, what their body is managing and how well the environment supports them. What looks like avoidance, defiance or overreaction is often a child communicating that something has become too difficult.

That means support begins with curiosity, not correction.

Connection before correction
Regulation before reasoning
Support rather than control
Play, participation and meaningful relationships
Respect for different brains, bodies and ways of communicating
Small, realistic changes that can work in actual family and classroom life

You do not need to become your child’s therapist. You need ideas that help you understand them, connect with them and make the next moment a little more manageable.

The story behind the symbol

Why the fern?

The fern represents growth that is gradual, supported and never perfectly linear. An unfurling frond does not need to be pulled open. With the right conditions, it develops in its own time.

The fern also holds personal meaning for me. Through my husband, and now through the life and family we share, Aotearoa New Zealand and Māori culture have become an important part of our story.

That idea sits closely beside the philosophy of Grow Through Connection. Every child has their own timing, rhythm, way of communicating and path towards participation. Our role is not to hurry them into becoming someone else. It is to understand who they are and create the conditions in which they can grow.

Practical support, grounded in connection

A place for practical, connected support

Grow Through Connection is for the adults who want to understand what is happening beneath a child’s behaviour and respond in a way that protects both connection and boundaries.

You will find practical resources, honest explanations and strategies that leave room for the real child in front of you.

Because children do not grow through perfect scripts or perfect adults.

They grow through connection.
